      Ruby Grant

Those who study, play, teach and love music are the beneficiaries of a bequest from Ruby Grant, whose 20-year relationship with and support for the School of Music culminated in 1998 with her final bequest to the School. During her lifetime, Miss Grant -- who was born in Indian Territory and lived to be 97 -- made gifts to help build the Catlett Music Center, purchase state-of-the-art equipment to help usher OU's piano pedagogy program into the 21st century, and support a myriad of other areas in the School.

In her final bequest, she honored her mother and father by creating a Piano Pedagogy Endowment Program and School of Music Endowment Fund, both named for Thomas Sherman Grant and Lizzie Lou Oter Grant. She also established a Reading Endowment Program in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education and an endowed faculty chair in music, both also named for her parents.

Miss Grant graduated from OU in 1929 with a degree in education, which, along with music, became a lifelong passion. Throughout her teaching career, she brought energy and inspiration into one-room schoolhouses in rural Oklahoma. Retired and in her 80s, she tutored Norman elementary students who were slipping behind in reading. An OU education professor once said a semester with Miss Grant could bring a child's reading grade up two levels. It was a combination of her basic good nature, knowledge of her subject and affection for her students. She continued her free tutoring almost until her death in 1998.
