When longtime OU supporter Jane M. Patten died in November 2008, she left a parting gift to the University she had loved and supported so generously throughout her life. An estate gift provided more than $100,000 to enhance the John H. and Jane M. Patten Teaching Award, established in 1989 to promote excellence in teaching in the traditional humanities.
She was a staunch supporter of education, a founding member of the Norman Public Schools Foundation and served as a member of the board of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. In addition to the OU teaching award, she supported the Joe C. and Carole Kerr McClendon Honors College, the College of Law, the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts, and the Athletics Department.
Born in Aledo, Ill., on Feb. 3, 1927, she moved to Norman after high school to live with her aunt, OU mathematics professor Dora McFarland, and attend the University. In 1949, she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics, with an emphasis in early childhood education. She married John H. "Jack" Patten, a community leader, chairman of the board of Security National Bank, and a state regent for higher education, who became a trustee of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. in 1979, serving until his death in 1983.
Mrs. Patten taught kindergarten at the OU Lab School until the birth of her children. After the death of her husband, she became chairman of the board of Security National Bank. She was active in community and social organizations, including Assistance League of Norman, Junior League of Norman, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, among others.
